about Kappa Delta Pi and the
Educational Leadership Honors Program


Who is eligible to join Kappa Delta Pi?
Any student who is majoring in education (any field of education) who’s G.P.A. is 3.6 or higher may be invited to consider joining the Educational Leadership Honors Program. It is recommended that students begin this pursuit during their freshman year at Mercyhurst College, and actively participate in the College’s HPY through the Honors Program Department. If you have questions, please contact either the honors Program Chairperson, or the Education Department Honors Counselor.

When are new members accepted?
Kappa Delta Pi is new at Mercyhurst College. Initiation of the new Chapter and Charter
Members is set for September 23, 2004. Hereafter, new members will be accepted in March annually.

What does it cost to join?
The cost of membership is $50. for the first year, and $48. annually thereafter.

What are the benefits?
- Membership to Kappa Delta Pi affiliates you with Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in

- Eligibility to apply for $100,000 which is annually awarded to members in form of scholarships
- Membership in the society provides professional educators with valuable professional resources

- Opportunity to attend the KDP Annual Conference to hear some of the most highly recognized
. educators in the field including Howard Gardner, Robert Sternberg and many others.

When does Kappa Delta Pi meet?
Formal meetings are held on the fourth Thursday, every other month to allow for more informal discussion groups to meet on alternate months. This is to encourage active participation by all members as discussions will be held on relevant issues to the field of education.

What happens at the meetings?
- Students from all disciplines of education have opportunities to fellowship
- Small discussion groups will dialog about some of the lastest issues impacting the field of education
- Opportunities to learn of others’ viewpoints and ideas as well as to develop professional leadership
- Discussion about research topics and ideas will be generated.

What is required once I join?

Academically?

  • All students who are active members in Kappa Delta Pi are expected to maintain a 3.6 G.P.A.
  • Students will participate in taking “Honors Challenge” Contract courses and regular Honors Courses with an educational perspective, making the Liberal Studies Core Curriculum more relevant for pre-service teachers.
  • Students will participate in the Academic Celebration during their junior year, and present completed research during their senior year.

Socially?

  • Opportunities to develop leadership skills within the context of the profession of education
  • Opportunities to discuss relevant topics in education with earnest openness among colleagues
  • Opportunities to meet others in the pre-service programs who share the same ideals, as well as those who have different perspectives and to gain understanding of a broad range of topics through this open forum

Why is the focus on educational leadership?
Mercyhurst College offers an outstanding program for pre-service teachers. By joining with others who aspire to achieve excellence in their profession, students can begin to develop leadership skills during their pre-service training. The field of education has undergone significant changes in the past few years, and will continue to experience ongoing changes as accountability and expectations realign with the purpose of public education. This data- driven climate requires leadership on the part of every professional in the field, as we face challenges and changes that are reshaping the classroom before our eyes. By creating a forum for discussion, we hope to further prepare the next generation of professional educators to lead the way for change with excellence and wisdom.
